The development of Old Testament Theology was done in various ways during and after the Reformation. â€Å"The critical approach to the Bible was a further attempt to break free from the authority of the church and church dogmatics.† (29) Martin Luther was a prominent person during this time as he revolted against the idea that the church was the only way for people to be saved. Other ideas such as Sola Gratia, Sola Fida, and Sola Scripture were various ways that also were discussed in opposition of only being saved by the church. Sola Gratia means by grace alone we are saved, Sola Fida means by faith alone we are saved, and Sola Scripture means scriptures alone save us and that the real authority is the biblical text. The various ideas behind how we are saved was a major part of Old Testament Theology. The Enlightenment Period began and emphasized reason and development of critical biblical studies. In 1787, during the Enlightenment Period, J. P Gabler founded Biblical Theology and separated it from Dogmatic Theology. Dogmatic Theology is based on the church whereas Biblical Theology is based on the beliefs of the scripture.
